Critical reception in 2004 was, predictably, split down the middle. Mainstream critics were appalled. The Village Voice called it "a petulant, sophomoric act of cinematic terrorism." The BBC dismissed it as "porn for people who own Adorno T-shirts." Meanwhile, queer film festivals embraced it as a masterpiece of subversion.
