It caught the fishing fleet out of harbor and blew the gulls inland like scraps of paper. In the market the stalls were emptied in minutes; ropes snapped and barrels rolled. The stele, which had always seemed to take storms as a personal matter, flared in the eye of the weather as if answering something only it and the sea remembered.
