The film follows Maria and her younger brother João (Hansel) as they are forced to leave home due to extreme poverty and a lack of food. As they wander the woods seeking work, they encounter a mysterious elderly woman named Holda ( Alice Krige ) who lives in a geometric, unsettling cottage.
