The game follows the story of Jin Sakai, a samurai who becomes the Ghost, a legendary warrior fighting against the invading Mongol forces on the island of Tsushima.

According to an interview with the game's director, Nate Fox, the team aimed to expand on the world of Tsushima by introducing new characters and storylines. When asked about the Cuttenoke Link, Fox mentioned that it's a "new narrative thread" woven into the fabric of the game, designed to deepen players' understanding of Jin Sakai's world and the island's history.
