The movie knows exactly what it is. It frequently pokes fun at the absurdity of the original show’s tropes, like the slow-motion running and the idea that lifeguards are solving major crimes.
The screenplay swings between slapstick, verbal sparring, and attempts at heartfelt beats. Some jokes land: physical gags and Johnson’s deadpan reactions score laughs. Yet much of the humor depends on crude set pieces that quickly tire, and the script favors spectacle over narrative depth.
