The film takes place 19 years after the events of the first book. Alice Kingsleigh, now 19 years old, is feeling suffocated by her mundane life and the expectations placed upon her by her family. She finds herself on a boat, which leads her to a fantastical world known as Wonderland. This world is ruled by the tyrannical Red Queen, who has abolished the White Queen's rule.
